How is the Pregnant Mare Urine collected?
Mares are tethered in narrow 3 1/2' wide stalls to restrict their movement, and affixed to urine collection devices. They are given very little water to ensure a high concentration of estrogen in their urine. The mares are forced to exist in this condition for five to six months of their 11month pregnancy. The mares are almost immediately re-impregnated while they are in "foal heat".
For each mare this cycle will continue for 8-9 years before they are "worn out" or until they do not conceive. They are then sent off to slaughter.
Conditions on the PMU farms are so harsh that many of the mares must be replaced every year.
