How can this happen?
Premarin has been in production since 1942. It is an industry that continues to generate billions of dollars each year. While the profits continue to increase the conditions in which the mares are kept has seen very little improvement.
There is no official government regulation for the treatment of PMU mares, only a "Code of Practice" that was written by the drug's manufacturer Wyeth-Ayerst for the PMU farmers to follow. There is no regulated enforcement of the "Code of Practice".
The significantly shorter life span of the PMU mares is clearly
an indisputable indication that the "Code of Practice" falls short regarding proper care.
As women of the baby boom generation approach menopause the demand for Premarin will increase, as will the number of PMU farms and mares and foals destined for slaughter.
