For the Love of Horses, Inc. 7371 Sterrettania Road Fairview, PA 16415 814-474-5382
Even though decreased production of Premarin has reduced
the number of mares on line, each year the industry continues to produce thousands
of foals who are weaned and carted off to the slaughter auctions,
often all in the same day. The fear of what comes next escalates as
the small herds of 40 -50 foals wait in crowded holding pens, until
they are run onto scales and sold by the pound.
The lucky
few rescued foals, frantic from the event must once again be loaded
and moved off to a holding farm where they will then have their blood
drawn for Coggins test. Wait for the lab results, and then endure
the long and grueling trip across the boarder into the United States.
When they arrive at our sanctuary, they are tremendously stressed,
and exhausted. With a little rest, lots of TLC, and the serenity
of our sanctuary, in a short period of time they are ready for visitors!
We start them on grain and gentle each foal while they are under our
care. Teaching them to trust can be a daunting task, as to this point
in time their human handling has not been the best. Many reports
and videos of the handling at the auctions are horrendous.
It
is quite a site as you walk the isle of the stable. All sizes,
shapes, and colors. Each little muzzle so full of its own personality.
While many potential adopters are busy picking the right color or
confirmation, the foals too are busy often picking their new owners.
On many occasions adopters abandon their color desires for that adorable
little foal that has chosen them!!
In 2002 we rescued
80 foals!! Most of which are now in their Happy Homes!
The remaining horses from that rescue are starting training at our
new location. Watch their progress as they are started during
our monthly clinics!!
